Providence Wood Bison
RECOVERY MANAGEMENT

Selection pressure has the potential to enhance or diminish the conservation and diversity of Wood Bison genetics.

Natural selection can only operate in free-roaming, wild public herds. This positive selective pressure is best demonstrated and preserved in naturally conserved Wood Bison habitat.

Consciously or subconsciously, private ranched bison herds can be pressured to select for marketable traits like growth, body confirmation, reproductive performance and docility. Over time, this selective pressure negatively impacts conservation and diversity of bison genetics.
Dr. C. Cormack Gates; Bison Specialist Group - North America, IUCN Species Survival Commission, 2008

The genetic importance of populations should be considered when selecting founding animals. Genetic management requires carefully managed breeding to ensure the retention of genetic diversity.
