HISTORICAL PRESERVATION

The tens of millions of buffalo (bison) appeared to be an endless resource as western frontier expansion moved to the Great Plains in the early 1800's.

The European demand for leather and felt lead to a mass slaughter of buffalo. By 1888 the once vast herds had been reduced to near extinction.

Today, the efforts of public and private conservation has ensured that bison will continue to be a part of our great Canadian heritage.
